Are You Free?

If your answer is, “sort of,” “mostly,” or “I think so,” then you aren’t being honest with yourself. No one is partially free. Freedom is an all-or-nothing deal.
Most of us are shackled within the invisible prison of our own making—our minds and the stories we tell ourselves trap us from realizing our true potential. At one point in our lives, likely when we were young and less self-reliant, we developed certain habits and ways of being as a means of self-protection.
Remember building forts as a kid? While we were constructing play forts with our friends, we were also devising ways to keep ourselves safe. Safe from uncertainty, disappointment, pain… and from so many other aspects of life outside our control. And while we may have outgrown the physical fort in the backyard, most of us have been unconsciously hiding inside the metaphorical fort we built when we were young. Sadly, this fort not only stops “danger” from getting in, it also stops us from getting out. What once protected us is now holding us back.
It’s important to honor those parts of ourselves that kept us safe because they served a vital purpose. It’s also crucial to recognize when these ways of being no longer serve, and are keeping us from our greatness.
I’m not suggesting that you quit your job or stop talking to your family. I’m asking you to reflect on whether you do these things from a sense of empowered choice or disempowered obligation.
I like Wayne Dyer’s definition of personal freedom. He says, "Freedom means you are unobstructed in living your life as you choose. Anything less is a form of slavery."
Acknowledging you are not free is the first step toward liberation. Imagine what your life would be like if you were truly free. Free of self-imposed limitations, expectations, and obligations. Free of self-defeating habits, addictions, and distractions. Free of the ‘shoulds’ and ‘should nots.’
Who would you be if you were free?
What are you willing to let go of?
What are you willing to let come?
